May 13th, 2009 | By Syracuse Man | Category: Places to VisitThe author of the famous children’s book The Wizard of Oz, Frank Baum, grew up in Chittenango, NY near Syracuse. There;’s a yellow brick road on the main street of town (instead of a regular sidewalk), an Aunt Em’s Restaurant, an Emerald City Grill, and a museum honoring Mr. Baum and his classic story. An annual parade is held in Chittenango featuring children dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character. This year, Chittenango will have an extra special Oz-Stravaganza celebrating the 100th anniversary of Baum’s book and the 70th anniversary of the movie based on it. If you’re planning to be in the Syracuse area June 5-7 (or want to make a special trip) Chittenango is the place to bring the kids!
