Syracuse Sports
May 3rd, 2009 | By eSyracuse.com | Category: SportsSyracuse, NY is synonymous with college basketball. Led by legendary basketball coach Jim Boeheim for more than 30 seasons, Syracuse University basketball team is the pride of Central, NY. Boeheim has coached Syracuse to three Final Fours. In 2003, current NBA Superstar Carmelo Anthony, led Syracuse on a magical run giving them their first national basketball championship. Fellow freshman, Gerry McNamara, made 6 three pointers (all in the 1st half) helping Syracuse pull out to an early lead. The game was sealed when Hakim Warrick blocked the shot of Kansas sharp shooter, Michael Lee, with just a second left.
In the 2009 Big East tournament, Syracuse continued to make national news with its miraculous 6 overtimes win, over heavily favored University of Connecticut. Syracuse was led by sophomore sensation Jonny Flynn who tallied an unprecedented 67 minutes this game and scored 34 points with 11 assists. During the stretch of overtimes, Syracuse never took the lead until the 6th one. It was this final overtime, with several players fouled out and a walk on in the game, Syracuse pulled away to a 127-117 victory.
In stunning fashion, Syracuse played the next day on short sleep and won another overtime game against West Virginia. Even though Syracuse gave up a half time lead and eventually lost the Big East championship to #1 seed Louisville, Flynn was names tournament MVP.
Needless to say, if you have the misfortune of visiting Syracuse during its frigid wintry months, a couple hours of Syracuse basketball in the Carrier Dome will be sure to warm you up!
